The first Olympic Games on a written record are held in Greece and are in 776 BCE. It is believed that the Olympics were going on before this date however they have no written records. Coroebus (a cook from Elis) ran about 210 yards which made him the very first Olympic champion. The Olympic Games take place every four years in different countries and have been for more than 1200 years (Rosenburg, 2011). Modern Olympics are interesting because they display varying sports and athletes and because they model good sportsmanship. First, the history of the modern Olympics are important to this day because the display the best of the best along with respect for their competitors. When the Romans gained control of Greece in 393AD they cancelled the Olympic Games for many years(Rosenburg, 2011). A Frenchman named Baron Pierre de Coubertin thought that the Olympic Games could be a platform for global peace. He thought that bringing athletes together every four years would encourage peace to the world. The Olympic Games was a huge achievement in 1896 (The Modern Olympics, 1977). Even though the Olympics are competitive, they still show how athletes from different counties can compete against one another with good sportsmanship skills. Finally, the most interesting winter sport is giant slalom because athletes go fast down a hill on skis. Giant slalom is a sport that tests the athlete’s agility and the ability to make tight turns around gates. The men’s giant slalom has around 55-75 gates. In the woman’s giant slalom event they have a range of 40-60 gates. A skier can get disqualified if the athlete misses one of the gates. Whichever athlete has the lowest combined total after two runs wins that competition (Ellis-Christensen, 2003). Giant slalom is a relatively new winter Olympic sport. The sport makes people and athletes look at skiing in a different way (Grout, 1984). The great thing about skiing is it is not a sport just for extreme athletes; it also can be relaxing and something to do with friends. In addition, to be able to be in the Olympic Games is a huge deal. Athletes from all over train to be the best they can be. The Olympics are appealing because they present sports and athletes and because they model superior sportsmanship. The best athletes from all over the world come together every four years to compete in challenges. Only the best of the best win the title to become champion.
